Gregory Eltringham ist Professor für Malerei, Schriftsteller, Musiker und praktizierender Künstler.
Vor dem Ausbruch von Covid-19 reiste Gregory längere Zeit, um für sein Atelier und seine Lehrtätigkeit zu recherchieren. Seine Bilder wurden in zahlreichen Einzel-, Zweipersonen- und Gruppenausstellungen in den Vereinigten Staaten und Europa ausgestellt.
Zu den Ausstellungen gehören: Old Fashioned, IGCA, Anchorage Alaska; Commitment to Scenario, Heinz-Martin Weigand Gallery, Berlin DE, Not Really: Fictive Narratives in Contemporary Art; eine Doppelausstellung mit Leonid Sokhranski bei SPAM Contemporary, Düsseldorf, Deutschland; Nord/Sud, mit dem Brooklyner Künstler Matt Blackwell in der Triangle Arts Association, Brooklyn NY; und East of Eden, Galerie Pryzmat, Krakau, Polen.
Gregory ist Mitglied des Friendship Magic Collective, einem fortlaufenden Projekt mit der Künstlerin Honor Bowman Hall, das eine Reihe von Aktivitäten umfasst, darunter Atelierproduktion, Schreiben und musikalische Performances, die alle um das Konzept herum organisiert sind: Das Vergnügen ist Teil des Programms.
In den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten diente die Figur in Eltringhams Atelierpraxis als Vehikel für kontinuierliche Untersuchungen, und die Arbeit war immer eng mit persönlichen Erfahrungen und Reaktionen auf äußere Kräfte verbunden. Seine aktuelle Produktion ist um eine Vielzahl von Motiven herum organisiert, die sich mit spezifischen konzeptionellen Fragen befassen, darunter Fragen zu Geschlecht, Privilegien, Identität und Politik. Die Arbeiten kommentieren und reflektieren soziale Dynamiken, fragwürdiges Verhalten, Wohnen und die Grenzen des persönlichen Komforts.
Das Gesamtwerk setzt sich weiterhin mit dem Erbe und der Relevanz der Malerei auseinander, wobei es sich auf historische Vorbilder bezieht und sich der aktuellen Zeit und Umstände bewusst ist. Eltringham hinterfragt weiterhin den aktuellen Dialog darüber, dass die Malerei nicht in der Lage ist, den Augenblick auszudrücken. Er sagt: „Ich verstehe das Argument, aber ich kaufe es nicht“.
Gregory Eltringham (geboren in Hartford, Connecticut, und wohnhaft in Savannah, Georgia) absolvierte das Art Institute of Boston, erwarb einen BA an der Northeastern University und einen MFA in Malerei am Savannah College of Art & Design. Er lehrte fünfzehn Jahre lang in Florida und Missouri, bevor er 2005 nach Savannah zurückkehrte, wo er derzeit Professor für Malerei am Savannah College of Art and Design ist. Gregory Eltringham is a painting professor, writer, musician, and practicing artist.
Prior to the Covid 19 outbreak, he traveled extensively during the year, conducting research for his studio and teaching practice. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo, two-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Exhibitions include: Old Fashioned, IGCA, Anchorage Alaska; Commitment to Scenario, Heinz-Martin Weigand Gallery, Berlin DE, Not Really: Fictive Narratives in Contemporary Art; a two person show with Leonid Sokhranski at SPAM Contemporary, Düsseldorf Germany; Nord/Sud, with Brooklyn artist Matt Blackwell at Triangle Arts Association, Brooklyn NY; and East of Eden, Gallery Pryzmat, Krakow, Poland. He is a member of Friendship Magic Collective, an ongoing project with artist Honor Bowman Hall, engaged in a range of activities including studio production, writing, and musical performance, all organized around the following concept: Enjoyment is Part of the Program.
Over the past two decades the figure has served as a vehicle of continuous investigation in Eltringham’s studio practice, and the work has always been closely tied to personal experiences and reaction to outside forces. His current production is organized around a variety of motifs addressing specific conceptual concerns including issues of gender, privilege, identity, and politics. The work comments and reflects on social dynamics, questionable behavior, habitation, and the limits of personal comfort. The overall practice continues to engage with the legacy and relevance of painting, positioned in relation to historic models with awareness of the current time and circumstances. Eltringham continues to question the current dialog regarding painting not being able to express the moment. He states, „I understand the argument, but I don’t buy it.“
Gregory Eltringham (b.
